Conversation
LEARNING ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY
We start with a chat about who you are serving, how you want this print to contribute to your goals, your organization or business and their values, and details about size, editions length, timelines, and cost estimates.
If after this conversation we feel like the project is a good match then we can move forward so I can develop concepts for you.
Before any creative work begins a 50% deposit of the total project fee is required, which is non-refundable should either party cancel the project for any reason. Other progressive payments are detailed in this meeting or the following contract as well. -

EXPLORATIONS TO FIND A DESIGN WE BOTH LOVE
I will create a digital mockup to present to you, your team, your board or otherwise. This mockup will give you a strong sense of layout and "look & feel" but will only be about 95% accurate as there are adustments that will be made between the computer and the press.
The design will be based upon our previous conversation and your goals, the fonts and ornaments I have on hand (including any custom carved items if that is requested and budgeted for), and my own aesthetic as a letterpress designer.
*PLEASE NOTE: When working with myself to create an edition of fine-art letterpress works, you are commissioning me to make something uniquely in the style of “Hoosier Type Company” with a similar look and feel. This may not resemble relationships you have had with other designers with numerous iterations. You are hiring me to make works of art for your cause that capitalizes on my style of art. -
Production & Finishing
THE PRINTS ARE MADE AND ANY FINAL STEPS ARE COMPLETED
After a design is approved by us both, I will begin the process of creating custom, physical lockups of wood type, ornaments, and any custom components are designed and cut. Paper is selected and inks are mixed per the presented Concepts.
Prints are manually printed, one color at a time with interstitial drying times between passes. Most ink colors are hand-mixed, and will likely exhibit color variation throughout the edition. Minor layout variations may be present as well as adjustments are made while on the press, and will not be submitted for approval.
Final prints are inspected, trimmed, and/or framed depending upon the project specifications before shipping or delivery.
I LOVE having the opportunity to use my unique style and craft to create works of art that can contribute to your cause! It’s very special to me that people would like what I do enough to ask me to help them on their project.
However, I am not a traditional “job printer” who designs and prints other people’s work and ideas...
I am a fine artist, working in the antique letterpress method. On occasion, I creatively partner with different individuals and organizations and lend my unique style to their cause.
My two primary rules are:
1) The design will be crafted in MY style, not yours.
2) This craft takes time, and therefore I cannot accept short timelines.
I seek to live a balanced life as a designer and dad, and due to my limited time and energy to contribute as a Creative Partner, I now only craft physical editions for projects in these categories:
Creation Stewardship
(advocacy for preservation of natural resources, fundraising, and other promotion of outdoor activities and venues.)
Arts & Culture
(fundraising for cultural organizations, experiences, or small-venue promotion, including projects that celebrate American history.)
Fostering Faith
(projects with a distinctly Christian message or mission for fundraising or retail use.)
Hoosier Hometowns
(for towns under 20,000 in population in Indiana for fundraising or retail use, or celebrating and supporting small businesses in Indiana.)
Custom orders require a minimum of 24 in the edition with a requested artist fee of around $400, depending upon size and complexity of the work. Larger editions are possible, with suggested project fees available upon request.
No rush jobs whatsoever.
Please note I ONLY work with wood type, which is inherently larger sized. Because of that I do not do invitations, programs, cards, packaging, or text size typesetting of any type which would require small, metal type.
