Type Talks:
Presentations & Workshops for
Colleges and Design Organizations

Whether you are interested in a keynote presenter, an educational talk on letterpress to broaden your students’ perspective of design and design history, a continuing education experience for your employees, a design workshop for your community arts center, or something else I’d love to be a part of your group’s experience.

I’m not a big name designer or speaker like Michael Bierut, Paula Scher, Jessica Hische, Aaron Draplin. However, over my 20+ years working as an artist, designer, and educator I have learned a lot about Art & Design and the Creative Path that I enjoy passing on to help other creatives be their best - whether students or professionals!

My creative practice aims to make an academic and aesthetic pursuit profitable, providing a humble paycheck for my family. I want to celebrate and preserve the fading craft of letterpress design & printing, pass on my enthusiasm for typography, fonts, and design history, and encourage other artists and designers along the way.

I think designers need so much encouragement as they walk that careful line of creativity and collaboration. And, as we know, artists can sometimes feel things more deeply. We all need someone in our corner helping show us an encouraging way forward in the arts - and I want to provide that for other makers.

In most of my keynotes I talk about how unexpected my creative path has been - full of failures and false starts, and a complete reboot in 2020. I also dive into my creative process using digital and analog tools. And, usually, I integrate design history in interesting ways to inspire and enlighten.

I have often heard from audiences how encouraging it was to hear how similar my failures and struggles have been to theirs! Or how my struggles with perfectionism are the same as what they deal with, but today offered a little hope! There’s no sense in putting up a facade, we are all perfectly imperfect people just trying to survive and stay creative…so let’s do this better together!

Sometimes speakers only focus on their success, but I want to be transparent and optimistic about what working as a creative can look like. Audiences get glimpses into the process of me slowly rebuilding a creative career and some lessons I'm learning along the way. I think it’s healthy for creatives to become comfortable with failure and persistence, and a lot of what I talk about touches on those things.

This new season has dramatically changed my approach to creativity and given me new insights which I think are valuable for student and professional artists to learn from. My new-ish and small letterpress design venture is very much a work in progress, but the growth is strong and continual (And at times almost more than I can keep up with!) and I hope the lessons I have learned will be valuable and encouraging to others.

All talks and presentations can be given remotely. Workshops are only available as in-person experiences. Times can be adjusted for most experiences to accommodate your audience/schedule.
